VIIRS BRDF/Albedo/NBAR - Inter-comparison with MODIS

The VNP43 product will deliver climate-quality consistent daily Suomi-NPP VIIRS Albedo, Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Functions (BRDF), and Nadir BRDF-Adjusted Reflectance (NBAR) quantities. This product will include new narrow-to-broadband coefficients (N2B) and production of gap-filled climate modeling grid (CMG) products. This project supports of the Direct Broadcast and near real time (NRT) communities and builds on the long standing MODIS heritage by producing and delivering an algorithm for Suomi NPP VIIRS that includes extensive accompanying quality and uncertainty information for the user.

Validation Plan

Tower albedometer data

  • Baseline Surface Radiation Network, (NOAA SURFRAD, DOE/ARM - US only)
  • National Ecological Observatory (NEON - US only)
  • International Long Term Ecological Research sites (ILTER) - Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) in Australia, the Greenland Climate Network (GCNet)
  • International Fluxnet tower networks (currently accessed through the Biogeochemical Dynamics DAAC at ORNL)

Albedo Validation Protocol

As part of the CEOS Working Group on Calibration and Validation (WGCV) Land Product Validation (LPV) Subgroup, the Surface Radiation focus area is currently deveoping a protocol for validation of satellite albedo products.

  • Sites that are spatially-representative at 500m to 2km resolution are considered
  • Landsat (also SPOT/Sentinel-2/Commercial High Resolution) used to determine representativeness

Intercomparisons with MODIS and other well-established concurrent satellite products

  • MSG/SEVIRI etc.
